High expectations can be highly motivational: they can inspire greater confidence, effort, and persistence, among other benefits. But a group of researchers including Chicago Booth’s Berkeley J. Dietvorst finds that the pressure of high expectations also carries a downside: the temptation to quit when faced with a setback.
