There are a number of ways that governments might cope with the massive new debts they’re taking on to fight the coronavirus. Chicago Booth’s Lubos Pastor says that none of these is perfect, but that we may be particularly likely to see central banks allowing inflation to creep up. If they do, the costs will be largely borne by older people, who thus far have been the largest beneficiaries of lockdown policies while paying the smallest economic costs.
